Is there something amiss?

This question needs a bit more setup. It’s just the tip of a very useful iceberg. For the whole scoop, you’ll just have to read “The Art of Possibility.” But the gist is this: When trying to reach someone (a colleague, a family member, a neighbor) who seems disengaged or disaffected, “the secret is not to speak to a person’s cynicism, but to speak to her passion.” Author Benjamin Zander is an orchestra conductor. And in this part of the book he’s taking about transforming interactions by “Giving people A’s,” meaning that everything changes if you assume the best about people’s motivations – you default to giving A’s instead of F’s. Benjamin explains this through a story about one of his underperforming musicians, Tanya:

“When I initially approached Tanya – not to reprimand a recalcitrant member of the team for not pulling her weight, but rather with the attitude, the certain knowledge, that she loved the music, that she wanted the concert to be a success, that she wanted to “get into the string” with her bow – I gave her an A. My question to her, “Is there anything amiss?” was a question to someone I imagined to be completely committed to the project we were engaged in together, someone who, for whatever reason, was having a hard time.”

Ask this question (or any question, really) after you’ve given an A, and see how the interaction unfolds differently. Continue reading Is there something amiss?

Can you tell me about some of the domains you already own but haven’t yet done anything with?

This is a fun question. It gives you a sense of how other people see and evaluate opportunities. Buying a domain is usually pretty cheap – a couple bucks. But you still have to invest a bit of money to buy it. So asking someone this question gives you a glimpse into their “vetted,” more serious business ideas list. Even if it’s still kinda out there, like GlutenFreeBuddhists.com or something (that’s available btw – I checked!), you can learn a lot about the business mind behind the domain. What activities / work / projects are giving you energy right now? How can you give them more oxygen?

When you feel energized, use that feeling as a compass. If writing in your journal makes you feel more energized then you should be writing more. If teaching your neighbors how to build tables energizes you then you should be teaching more. If working on your photography side hustle energizes you then you should be working on it more. Take this compass VERY seriously. Continue reading What activities / work / projects are giving you energy right now? How can you give them more oxygen?

What perception, perhaps even one word, do you want your customers to hold when they think of your business?

A business does best when everyone involved (highest leadership all the way to hourly employees) understand that the company exists to fill a higher purpose than just selling widgets or increasing shareholder value. As John Jantsch puts it, answering this question can lead you to a “documented sense of higher purpose for your business.” Maybe you want customers to think “peace of mind.” Or “more time with family.” Or “community.” Continue reading What perception, perhaps even one word, do you want your customers to hold when they think of your business?

What have you enjoyed most about working here?

This is one of those questions where the particular answer doesn’t matter as much as the delivery. If your interviewer looks genuinely happy to answer this question and doesn’t have to think for a whole minute to come up with her response, that’s a good sign. If she’s stuck or can’t hide a look of resignation, then you should see red flags. Continue reading What have you enjoyed most about working here?

What concerns do you have about potentially working for (the company)?

In an interview, the best candidates are not just there to be interviewed, they’re also there to do their own evaluating of the company and its people. Anyone worth hiring has done their homework and has thought realistically about the things that may not fit. Ask this question and you’ll know if you’re talking to someone who will get things done (and enjoy working) despite challenges at the company. Continue reading What concerns do you have about potentially working for (the company)?

If you could have an “everyday super power” what would you choose?

I LOVE this question. But let’s get something straight first. Flying is not an everyday super power. Neither is mind control or time travel. Those are too crazy. But when my friend says that he would always want to know what time it was without having to look at a watch or clock, that’s an everyday superpower. Or when a member of my coworking space says that she would want to be able to feel awesome after just 1 hour of sleep every night, that’s everyday. Faster than a speeding bullet? Nope, off limits. Always know where there’s an open parking spot? Now we’re talking! Continue reading If you could have an “everyday super power” what would you choose?

At what time of day am I MOST creative? What am I doing to capitalize on that time of day?

The answer to this one changes for everybody. I’m definitely a creative night owl. I always catch a second wind around 10:30pm. My wife is most creatively energized in the morning. The actual hour doesn’t matter. What matters is that you know when you are most creative. This is fertile ground! Let your good ideas live and thrive here! Continue reading At what time of day am I MOST creative? What am I doing to capitalize on that time of day?

When you think of your dad, what do you think of first? What is/was important to him?

Obviously related to the “When you think of your mom…” question. Like it or not, your parents strongly dictate who you are. Either we become them slowly or we consciously push against qualities in them we dislike. This question will tell you about your grandparent, your parent, and yourself all at the same time. Continue reading When you think of your dad, what do you think of first? What is/was important to him?

If we could repeat one of the vacations we took when you were a kid, which one would you want to repeat? Why?

Take a trip down memory lane. There are less hormones on that lane. This question gets your teenager thinking about the good old days. And saying “when you were a kid” helps solidify that you are starting to see your teenager not as a child anymore. He’ll dig that. Continue reading If we could repeat one of the vacations we took when you were a kid, which one would you want to repeat? Why?

Who is the funniest person in your class? Why is he/she so funny?

I had a friend in 4th grade named Adam and he would tuck his knees up into his shirt and walk around class that way cracking everybody up. I still like talking about him! Your kid will probably have more to say in response to this question than she would for “How was your day?” Continue reading Who is the funniest person in your class? Why is he/she so funny?

What would you like to do together in the future? (Just the two of us)

It’s the last part – “just the two of us” – that makes this question important. If you’ve got kids, you know why. But even if you don’t, for example, my wife and I noticed that pretty much all the travel we’d done in the last 2 years was for weddings and visiting family. These are beautiful occasions, to be sure, but it’s different to think about what you want to experience in the future just as a couple. Keep growing! Stay adventurous! Is that the best use of my time? (If it is, I’ll get right on it. BUT I’d like to ask up front just to make sure we’re all on the same page.)

Ask this respectfully and make sure to do the task well if it’s still given to you. But if you’re the kind of person who gets a lot done, your boss/team might start over-relying on you for high-output instead of high-impact. This question can help you be about high impact – moving the needle instead of just checking off boxes. (But you need good rapport for this question to work!) Continue reading Is that the best use of my time? (If it is, I’ll get right on it. BUT I’d like to ask up front just to make sure we’re all on the same page.)

When you think of the word “successful” who comes first to your mind? Why?

This question doesn’t feel intimidating but it actually tells you a TON about a person’s values. Does she think of Sheryl Sandberg? Does she think of a beloved college professor? Does she think of her grandmother? In a very direct sense, someone’s definition of success dictates their whole life. Continue reading When you think of the word “successful” who comes first to your mind? Why?

What cause are you passionate about?

It sounds weird but just try it. Once even. Maybe you’re at a friend-of-a-friend’s housewarming. When you get to that part in a conversation with someone new where you’d normally ask “So what do you do?” give this a try instead. If the resulting conversation isn’t interesting or smooth, at least it will be DIFFERENT. Continue reading What cause are you passionate about?

What is the meanest thing you remember me doing to you when we were growing up?

This is of course the corollary to the “What is the nicest thing…” question. As much as we need occasions to thank each other, we need occasions to ask for forgiveness and to forgive. (Once I dumped chocolate syrup on a painting my sister had spent weeks on. I can’t even remember what she “did” to me to deserve that. What a little shit move on my part…) Continue reading What is the meanest thing you remember me doing to you when we were growing up?

If you could send an email to 1 million people that they would HAVE to read, what would you write in it?

This is the premise behind an interesting online experiment called the Listserve Project. Joining the Listserve makes you eligible to be the one person chosen each day to address the entire group. And you can say almost whatever you want. This question can show you what someone cares about (self-expression, giving advice, promoting something…) and it can show you what he thinks should get more attention in the world. Continue reading If you could send an email to 1 million people that they would HAVE to read, what would you write in it?

If you succeed, what does that look like for you? Exactly what does it look like? And how does it feel? What do you hear? Taste? Have?

Making your success very, very clear and real in your mind makes you that much more likely to achieve it. You have a better sense of what intermediary steps will be necessary, you will anticipate road blocks sooner, and you will possess a stronger sense of purpose. That’s why this is a great one to ask family members, teammates at work, friends… Continue reading If you succeed, what does that look like for you? Exactly what does it look like? If we are wildly successful in building and selling this product, would our customers be the kind of people we would like to hang out with?

If the answer is “No” that doesn’t mean you should necessarily abandon your business for another one. But it’s just a good question to think about. Where does your energy come from? From the idea of meeting a demand in the market or from the idea of serving and knowing this particular set of people who like what you do?
